چکیده

In this paper, we reconsider the appropriateness of certain statistical analyses in innovation adoption studies and suggest that partial observability models may sometimes be more useful. The proposed models allow for a flexible specification of the process of adoption from one stage to two stages, facilitate the modelling of non-adopters and remedy the violation of the assumption of full information. An application to the adoption of organic cultivation in Greece demonstrates the relative merits of the proposed analysis. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Word count: 13,442 Two-Stage Partial Observability Models of Innovation Adoption

Many theories on the adoption and diffusion of innovations posit that adoption is the outcome of a decision process. A two-stage conception of that process involving an awareness stage followed by a stage combining evaluation and adoption seems particularly useful. Several empirical studies indicate that the effect of mass media and change agents is relatively concentrated in creating awareness...

A Two-Stage Model of Innovation Adoption with Partial Observability: Model Development and Application

We show how one can specify micro-level hazard models of adoption that separately represent the awareness and evaluation/choice stage of the adoption decision process even when one observes only the final outcome, i.e. adoption or not. These models can be derived from random utility theory. Using a small simulation study, we show that the two-stage partial observability specification retrieves ...
